Cryptography: A shift in opinion

R3x had viewed cryptography as muddled numbers, people messing with numbers and creating weird equations, well it turns out that now he feels he was wrong. A few sessions R3x attended at the Amrita Centre for Cyber Security at Ettimadai made him realise that he had felt the same due to a lack of the understanding of maths behind the subject. He says that Cryptography is fascinating if a person either has an intense longing towards maths or if he/she loves solving problems otherwise it may seem useless and tiring.                                                      R3x promises to share the various stuff he learnt to everyone using this blog. He wishes to give a basic introduction to everyone in this blog post.

Cryptography is the art of making or solving codes.

One may come to think of it as something of the past generation with little or no applications for the future. But it is not like that, Cryptography is evolving with time. All the Data stored on the internet it now encoded and people are racing to find better ways to encrypt data so that even the fastest supercomputers are not able to break those.

R3x learnt that there are basically two divisions in Cryptography. One is the symmetric ciphers where the sender and the receiver must use the same key to encode and decode the data and the other is the Asymmetric ciphers where the sender and the receiver use different keys which have some mathematical relationship. The most commonly used symmetric ciphers are the AES and the DES and the most common asymmetric cipher is the RSA. Ciphers have been cracked before and their information has been recovered the greatest example being the cracking the Enigma and the information used to save countless lifes.  Thinking of better, non-crackable algorithms have gained paramount importance in the field.
